What is the Lactation Consultation?
The IBCLC is trained to evaluate risk factors that put breastfeeding and baby's growth at risk. The lactation consultant (LC) takes a full history and assesses infant's oral anatomy and suck. An examination of the breasts is an important part of the evaluation. The infant is weighed before and after breastfeeding to measure how much milk baby transfers at the breast. Assistance with latch, assessment of infant behavior at the breast, and careful history taking is important to get a grand picture of the breastfeeding dyad. As a result the LC formulates a plan of care that supports the infant's growth. A provider report will be faxed to the pediatrician to ensure continuity of care when there are concerns.
